Sevier County 4-H Wildlife Judging Team Members recently brought home honors in the Eastern Regional 4-H Wildlife Judging Team Competition held at The University of Tennessee Holston Research Farm in Knoxville.
Senior teams placed second and third in the Regional Event with one individual competing at the Junior High Level.
The second place senior team included Heather Hatcher and Lauren Jenkins – Pigeon Forge High School; Jared Bruhin – Sevier County High School; Josh Gideon – Gatlinburg Pittman High School. Third place senior team included Hannah Clevenger and Julia Ferguson, Gatlinburg Pittman High School and Daniel Hatcher – Pigeon Forge High School. Both teams have qualified for the State Contest. As individuals, Heather placed 2nd high, Jared 5th high, Daniel 6th high, Julia 7th high and Lauren 10th high overall.
The senior team will travel to Reelfoot Lake in West Tennessee for the state competition on June 16. At the state event, twelve teams from across Tennessee will compete for a trip to the National 4-H Wildlife Evaluation Judging Team Competition in Arkansas, later this summer.
Rachel Jenkins, Pigeon Forge Middle School represented Sevier County as an individual in the Junior High Division.
In wildlife judging, 4-H members learn to identify common wildlife foods, interpret wildlife habitat from aerial photographs and make recommendations for on-site wildlife management practices for landowners. Wildlife judging gives young people the opportunity to develop their decision making skills, while learning about wildlife management practices.
