Two weeks ago, the Seymour Middle School band set off for Orlando to compete against students from across the country at OrlandoFest. They came home winners.
The band fended off competitors from four different states to win 1st place in the middle school division and brought home superior gold in the concert band division.
Tonya Metler, whose seventh grade son Tanner plays percussion, said the kids were very excited to be there and showed it off by singing “Rocky Top” when the individual bands were called.
“It’s a very good group of kids,” she said. “They deserved to win.”
This is not the first win for director Hope McKay, who tries to take the band to a competition each year. Metler said McKay is an excellent band director who usually comes back with an award.
The kids unwound with a fun two days at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, followed by one day at Cocoa Beach, before piling on the bus for the drive back on Mother’s Day.
“I spent Mother’s Day with 87 kids,” McKay said.
