The Great South Athletic Conference announced its All-Conference teams for men’s and women’s tennis for the 2011 season earlier today with Agnes Scott College sweeping the women’s top three individual honors while Piedmont and Huntingdon split the Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year awards on the men’s side of the court.
On the women’s side, the GSAC Player of the Year is Rachel Storz from Agnes Scott College who posted a perfect 7-0 record in league action without dropping a set in conference play to earn her second straight Player of the Year honor. Joining Storz as an individual award winner in 2011 was teammate Mariel Herrera of Agnes Scott who was named the Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year finishing undefeated in GSAC play at 7-0 also not dropping a set to a conference foe.
For his efforts guiding the Scotties to a regular season championship in women’s tennis, Agnes Scott Head Coach Glen Hill was named the GSAC Coach of the Year for the third time in four years. The veteran leader’s squad finished the league season undefeated at 7-0 to earn the #1 seed in the upcoming championship tournament to defend their 2010 title.
On the men’s side, Moses Das of Piedmont College earns his second straight nod as the GSAC Player of the Year finishing league action with a 5-1 record taking 11 of the 14 sets he played in conference. The GSAC Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Year is Tyler Creamer of Huntingdon College who carried an undefeated 6-0 record at the #2 singles slot for the regular season champion Hawks.
Named Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year was Huntingdon Head Coach Charlie Lane who led his Hawks to a flawless 6-0 record in GSAC play on the season. By virtue of their undefeated finish, the Hawks also grab the #1 seed for the upcoming championship tournament as well.
Morgan Douglas, a senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, was Maryville College’s lone All-Conference honoree. Douglas went 8-6 on the season as the Scots’ No.1 singles players. Morgan finished the season 5-2 in GSAC challenges and closed the season strong with a 7-3 record over her last ten matches.
