Walters State Community College is now taking applications for its summer math and science camps, which will be held on all Walters State campuses. The camps are funded through a state diversity grant and offered at no cost to participants.
Camps are open to students who will be in the eighth and ninth grades this fall who live in Walters State’s 10-county service area: Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hancock, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson, Sevier and Union. Students should have strong mathematic ability and interest. Students cannot have had any disciplinary action (suspension, etc.) at school during the past year.
“We want to introduce students who have potential in math and science to the college atmosphere,” explained Dr. Lee Dell’Isola, professor of mathematics at Walters State. “Hopefully, this camp will inspire students to take more math classes in high school and be better prepared for those courses.”
The camps feature “hands on” learning. Students will discover the roles math and science play in crime scene investigations among other topics.
“This won’t be just sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher. Everything will be active learning,” Dell’Isola said.
Camps will be held on Walters State’s Morristown and Greeneville/Greene County campuses from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. July 11-15. Camps are scheduled for the Sevier and Claiborne county Campuses from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. July 18-22.
Lunch, snacks, backpacks and T-shirts will be provided. Students will also receive a cash award if they attend every session.
Applications are due Friday, May 13, and are available at www.ws.edu/math. A letter of recommendation from a math teacher is also required. A printed application may be requested by calling Tammy Holt at (423) 585-6864.
