Competing in one of the nation’s premier meets for throws events, the Tennessee track & field teams managed to record three top-10 finishes Saturday at the UCSD Triton Invitational in LaJolla, Calif.
Lady Vols Annie Alexander and Laquoya Kelly turned in seventh-place finishes in the invitational and open divisions of the shot put, respectively. Alexander’s top effort, which came against a field littered with world-class athletes, was a throw of 54 feet, eight inches. Kelly posted a measurement of 44-0 3/4.
For the Vols, sophomore Les Gilbert had the top mark of Saturday’s Big Orange competitors. His fling of 181-11 left him 10th in the invitational division of the javelin throw. Freshman Blake Hamilton was 14th at 174-4.
In the women’s javelin throw, UT senior Holly Kane stretched the tape to 131-5 to settle for 11th, while teammate Katherine Dresch was 16th at 120-6.
