RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The University of Tennessee Lady Vol rowing team closed out its stay at the 2011 Lake Natoma Invitational by capturing first place honors in Group B, finishing fourth overall on Sunday morning.
The Lady Vols were bolstered by a sensational performance in the Varsity 8+. UT was able to defeat No. 9 Wisconsin and Notre Dame in the V8+, crossing the line in 6:31.10. The Fighting Irish completed the course in 6:33.0, exactly one second ahead of the Badgers.
The victory was the deciding factor in UT’s final standings within the group. All three teams finished tied with 12 points. The V8+ result served as the tiebreaker, ensuring a group title for the Lady Vols.
UT began the day with a third-place finish in the V4+, completing the course in 7:30.89. Wisconsin took home first place with 7:17.05, while Notre Dame crossed the line in 7:23.13.
In the 2V8+, Wisconsin was again victorious with a time of 6:35.30. ND narrowly edged the Lady Vols, finishing in 6:45.20. The Orange and White boat finished in 6:45.57.
No. 5-ranked Stanford captured the event with 17 points in the Group A finals today. Fourth-ranked California came in second while No. 6 Brown took third place honors.
Tennessee will be off next weekend before traveling to Princeton, N.J. to face off in a dual match with No. 1 Princeton and No. 2 Virginia. Those races will serve as UT’s final tuneup before the 2011 Conference USA Championships, which will be held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 14.
