Demorest, Ga.- The Scots’ softball team traveled to Piedmont College to battle the Lions for a share of the 2011 GSAC regular season title. The hometown Lions’ hitting and pitching swept the Scots in a Sunday doubleheader by the scores of 9-1 and 8-0 in run-ruled shortened contests.
Piedmont hurler B.J. Cofer limited the same Scots lineup that pounded out 42 hits just the day before to only four hits and one runs over six innings. MC’s Chastity Smith led the visitor’s offense with a 3-for-4 performance with Jessica McCarter collecting MC’s only additional hit off Cofer.
The Lions connected for nine earned runs on 11 hits off MC hurler Sarah Reeder who fell to 9-10 on the season.
In the second challenge, Piedmont pitcher Brittney Head one-hit the Scots while striking out six to earn her 11th win of the season on the mound.
Maryville’s only base hit was collected by sophomore outfielder Ashlan Cosner. Jessica McCarter (3-6) suffered the loss as the Lions connected for five earned runs on 10 hits to earn the win.
Piedmont advances to 22-10 on the season and 11-1 in GSAC challenges. Maryville (12-16, 8-4 GSAC) will finish the regular season hosting Emory University on Saturday for “Senior Day”. First-pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
