On March 17, Melka and Jon Harmon visited with the elementary students at Seymour Community Christian School presenting the work of the Appalachian Bear Rescue.
The Kindergarten to third grades met first learning about the habits of black bears in Tennessee. The fourth to sixth grades came next and enjoyed the display the Harmons set up.
The students made banks ahead of time to collect money. This money will be used to help the bear the elementary will adopt.
Since SCCS was the first school this year to participate, they got to adopt the first bear that was rescued.
On March 22, Mrs. Williams, the elementary supervisor, received an e-mail that the first cub had been rescued on March 20.
He is approximately two months old and weighs about five pounds. He was found near Gatlinburg.
With great excitement, Mrs. Williams rushed to each classroom to show the picture of their “little cub”.
Everyone was very excited. Now the students will raise money to feel the little one and vote on a name.
Last year, the children raised over $350 for the twin bear cubs they adopted. They named them Ginko and Shadow. They have been released back into the wild.
