According to 2010 census data released last week, Sevier County’s population is expanding at a rate greater than the rest of the state.
The numbers show a 26.3 percent increase since 2000, 15 percent more than any other county. Following the huge population booms in the late 90s and 2000, the growth slacked off.
“When the economy took a hit, we slowed down,” said David Wear with the Sevier County Economic Development Council.
Much of the renewed population surge can be attributed to new growth in tourism for the county, with more attractions, restaurants, and shopping. All of which could contribute to new strength in the local economy.
Wear remains optimistic about the recovery, “We’re not back to where we want to be, but we’re getting there slowly.”
