The Seymour Branch Library has been in search for a new librarian since former manager Tony Krug left for another position near the end of last year.
As of this week the branch has received that manager, Cassandra Graesser, who officially started on Monday.
Graesser moved here from the Washington D.C. area where she received her Master’s in Library Science from the University of Maryland.
While near there she worked at an art and journalism library and has also worked in two academic libraries.
Before she was in D.C. she received her undergraduate from South Dakota State where she studied politics and sociology, but also discovered her interest in library work.
Her first library job was a student position in circulation in the campus library.
“I had found a couple of really good mentors and I really liked the work,” Graesser said. “When I was coming up toward graduation and didn’t really know what to do with myself my mentors asked me if I had considered library school.
“The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me.”
Now in Sevier County, Graesser looks forward to gearing library services to the residents’ needs, and working on existing programs as well as possibly adding additional programs in the future.
“A big part of the job will be keeping up with the facilities and seeing what things in the building can be stored more efficiently and maximize the building’s potential,” she said. “I’ll also be looking for ways to expand, either the programs or even the building itself.”
She echoed the assistant librarians’ comments by saying that the branch could always use volunteers to help with some of the everyday jobs like shelving and cataloging books.
Although Graesser has not had much time to settle into her new position, she said the area and residents have already made an impression on her.
“The people here are nice and they seem really appreciative of the library, which is a great feeling coming in,” she said.
Residents will have a chance to meet Graesser at 6:30 p.m. March 24 during the Friend’s of the Library group at the Seymour branch.
