The Maryville College softball team split their second consecutive day at the 2011 Maryville College Invitational tournament on Sunday.
After defeating Ohio Northern earlier in the day, MC fell to Young Harris College 11-3 in six innings.
The teams exchanged homerun blasts in the first inning. Maryville’s Chastity Smith lifted an offering over the left fielder’s head to tie the game 1-1.
The Mountain Lions used a three-run homerun to secure a 5-1 advantage in the second inning and tacked on a two-out run in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.
Back to back doubles by Smith and Jessica McCarter pushed across a Scots’ run and Andrea Brew punched a single to score McCarter to make it a 6-3 ballgame.
Young Harris exploded for four runs on four hits in the fifth to push their lead to 10-3.
An unearned run in the sixth put the Mountain Lions up 11-3 for the run-ruled victory.
MC’s Jessica McCarter suffered the loss with four innings of work on the mound, surrendering six hits and five earned runs.
Smith was MC’s hitting standout. The second baseman went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Maryville (3-11) will return to action next Saturday in LaGrange, Georgia when they challenge LaGrange College in a Great South double header.
