The Maryville College baseball team advanced to 8-4 on the season after defeating the Rhodes College Classic tournament host Lynx by the score of 7-2 on Sunday evening.
Following a shutout against No. 12 ranked Marietta, MC broke out the bats to post seven runs on 11 team hits. Maryville put a pair of runs on the board in their first at-bat. A double-steal sent Blake Gentry home for the first run of the game. Centerfielder Mikee Moore soon stroked a single to plate Zac Hargett.
MC’s scoring in the fifth came on a two-out rally. Gentry reached base on an errant throw and Hargett promptly scored the second baseman with an RBI single. In the 6th, Myles Cordell singled, stole a pair of bases and scampered home on a bad throw by the catcher. Cordell struck again in the 7th with a single that drove in Moor.
The Scots added a pair of insurance runs in the 9th when Hargett was chased home by another Cordell RBI single. First baseman Kyle Cyprysiak stroked a double to score Cordell for the second time of the game to finish MC’s scoring.
Reigning GSAC Pitcher of the Week Johnny Lingo earned the win with 5.2 innings of three-hit pitching. The senior right-hander struck out three and walked only one while moving to 2-0 on the mound this season. Senior closer Mark Morales struck out two Rhodes hitters en route to gaining his fourth save of the young season.
