The No.1 seeded Maryville College women’s basketball team dropped their first game to Agnes Scott College since the 2008 season and were eliminated from the 2011 Great South Athletic Conference tournament in Montgomery, Alabama by the score of 81-68 on Friday afternoon.
Agnes Scott took advantage of MC on the boards by out rebounding Maryville by a 29-17 margin with the Georgian Scotties pulling down 11 offensive put backs. Agnes Scott connected on 42 percent of their shots while the Orange and Garnet hit only 7-of-28 shots (25 percent) while only 2-of-10 attempts fell from beyond the arc. Agnes Scott posted a 23-point advantage at the 2:15 mark and took a 36-17 lead to the halftime intermission.
The Scottie zone continued in the second half. Despite the strong scoring efforts of Paige Sevier and Kiera Payne, Maryville could only get to within nine points twice within the final two minutes of the game. The 58 percent shooting, including a 4-for-6 effort from long distance, by Agnes Scott did not allow an ample opportunity for an MC comeback.
Maryville finished the game being out rebounded by ASC 51-33. MC only connected on 5-of-25 three- pointers (20 percent) and finished only 33 percent from the field.
Agnes Scott (15-12, 7-7 GSAC) was paced by the 31 point performance by Arielle Register. Register threw down 6-of-7 treys while going 9-for-11 from the field. Genefine Sapateh added a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Kimberly Reeves paced all players on the boards with 14 to push the Scotties to the GSAC finals.
Maryville (21-5, 14-0 GSAC), ranked No.5 by the NCAA within the South region, saw Kiera Payne lead the Orange and Garnet in scoring with 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Paige Sevier launched 17 three-pointers, but connected for only 17 points.
Coach Travillian’s squad will now await the NCAA selection early next week to see if MC will earn their 18th bid to the post-season tournament.
