Teachers would have to wait two extra years for tenure under a proposal by Gov. Haslam released last Thursday.
Under the current system, the waiting period is three years before being eligible for tenure. The proposal by Haslam, however, would require a five year waiting period and the passing of a performance review prior to tenure being granted.
“Teacher tenure itself isn’t a bad thing,” said Seymour High School Economics teacher, Charles Ogle. “The problem comes in when they give it out too easily, and this bill somewhat fixes that.”
The proposal by Haslam would also remove the 90 school cap on charter schools in the state. At-risk students would be given first priority to the new charter schools and school districts would be allowed to open access to all students, under the proposal.
“More access to charter schools would be a great addition to the state’s education system,” said SHS English teacher, Danielle Smallwood. “As long as they don’t draw too many students and too much money away from the regular public schools, I think they are very good.”
Haslam also proposed allowing college students to use lottery scholarship money for summer classes.
