A local Seymour Girl Scout Troop is teaming up with schools to give back to those less fortunate.
Girl Scout Troop 20779 has chosen C.R.O.S.S. Food Ministry as the primary charity they are supporting this year, and to maximize their efforts the girls are working with Seymour High, Middle, Intermediate, and Primary schools to collect canned food for the ministry to distribute.
So far the girls in the troop, Makayla McVittie, Savannah Hebert, Julia Young and Emily Hutchins, have held can drives at SMS in December and more recently SPS this month.
Under the leadership of Dr. Laura Hebert, the troop collected 2,168 cans that primary students donated throughout the week before Valentine’s Day.
The number of cans collected beat out their count at the middle school by only eight, which makes the combined total collected from both schools 4,328.
The girls counted and collected the cans from classrooms each day, keeping track of which class collected the most.
Deidra Helton’s second grade class ended up donating the most cans and won a popcorn party as a reward.
Before the school year is out the troop plans to hold non perishable food drives at Seymour intermediate and high schools.
