The Maryville College softball team kicked of the 2011 season with a home opener against the Vikings of Berry College. The new NCA Division III member from Rome, Georgia swept the Scots in a double header by the scores of 8-4 and 12-3.
In their opening game, MC got on the scoreboard first with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Berry answered with two unearned runs in the top of the third inning. The Vikings took the lead in the fourth and Maryville answered in the fifth to make the score 3-3 after five complete innings.
Berry broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning pushing five runs across the plate. The Scots tallied a final run in the last inning to make the score 8-4.
Offensively, MC saw shortstop Leah Kelley and first baseman Jessica McCarter each stroke a pair of hits. McCarter had Maryville lone RBI. Chastity Smith, Alana Van Hoy, and Chelsi Hooper each added a hit to the Scots seven hit team attack.
Junior right-hander Sarah Reeder took the loss after a complete game effort surrendering only a pair of earned runs.
In the nightcap, Berry pounded out 15 hits and capitalized on MC’s three errors. Maryville earned a three run lead in the bottom of the first inning, but was shut out the remainder of the contest. Designated player Megan Lock went 2-for-2 while Leah Kelley and Alana Van Hoy posted MC’s only additional hits for the evening.
Senior left-hander Jessica McCarter took the loss on the hill after surrendering four earned runs in four complete innings of work. McCarter struck out three and walked only one batter.
