The Maryville College men’s basketball team concluded their regular season with a strong Great South Athletic Conference road victory over LaGrange College on Saturday evening by the score of 81-69.
A LaGrange steal and dunk by Nic Whitfield as time expired in the first half gave the Panthers a 37-34 advantage at the intermission. Both team connected on 14-of-30 shots from the field.
Maryville used a 29-16 run at the 8:23 mark to post their first 10-point advantage. The Scots’ defense forced LaGrange to a 37 percent shooting effort in the second half and vaulted to a 16-point advantage with one minute remaining. MC cruised to the 12-point victory which positioned them as the No.1 seed in the upcoming GSAC tournament.
LaGrange (4-21, 2-4 GSAC) saw Nic Whitfield paced the Panthers in scoring with 23 points. Blake Craft and Britt Gaylor each added 13 points.
The Scots (16-9, 5-1 GSAC) were led by Milton Stanley’s 10-for-15 effort from the field for 23 points. The junior added a pair of dunks, two assists, two steals, and five rebounds to his complete effort. Junior forward Donald Rucker tallied a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Eryk Watson added 18 points after sinking 5-of-7 three pointers. Dustin Baxter was strong at the guard position hitting a pair of treys en route to a 10 point performance.
Maryville will prepare for the upcoming GSAC tournament in Montgomery, Alabama on February 25-26.
