



The Maryville College women’s basketball team earned their 16th consecutive victory in their final regular season challenge with an 83-80 win over LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia on Saturday evening.
MC outscored the nationally ranked scoring Panthers 42-37 in the first half with 46 percent shooting and a strong 6-for-10 effort from beyond the arc.
Both teams increased their shooting percentages in the second half. Maryville blistered the nets hitting 14-of-24 attempts (59 percent) as LaGrange kept pace hitting 52 percent of their attempts.
LaGrange battled to within two points at the 2:31 mark, but key three pointers by Paige Sevier and Kiera Payne preserved the win for MC.
LaGrange (20-4, 11-3 GSAC) had an outstanding performance from Katie Covington. Covington hit 14-of-19 shots from the field and 11-of-19 free-throws for a 40 point effort. She completed the double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. Heather Miller added 16 points while Elizabeth Williams tossed in 15 points.
Maryville (21-4, 14-0 GSAC) saw Janell Menard connect on 9-of-15 shots for a team-high 22 points. Paige Sevier was 4-for-6 from long distance en route to a 16 point performance. Lailah Farmer added a double-double from the point guard position with 10 assists and 13 points. Tayler Smith added a dozen points while she and Whitney Mitchell paced MC in rebounds with six each.
The Scots will now prepare for the Great South Athletic Conference tournament on February 25-26 in Montgomery, Alabama on the campus of Huntingdon College. The women’s team champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA post-season. MC is seeking their school record 18th invitation to post-season action.
