The Maryville College women’s basketball team won their ninth consecutive challenge with a 96-52 win over Great South Athletic Conference challenger Salem College on Sunday afternoon in MC’s Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Freshman Lauren Burnett tied her career high with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting. The sharp shooter also deposited 6-of-8 three-pointers while dishing out seven assists and pulling down six rebounds.
Maryville forced 17 first half turnovers while allowing only 21 points before the intermission. The Scots connected at a blistering 57 percent clip that included a 6-for-15 effort from beyond the arc. At the half, Maryville led the Spirit 53-21.
MC completed the second half converting Salem’s 26 total turnovers to 41 points. Maryville finished the second half hitting 54 percent of their shots and 8-for-16 from long distance.
Salem (6-12, 4-6 GSAC) was paced by Kelsey Rector’s 20 points. She went 7-for-12 from the floor and hit a trio of three-pointers. Shamaz Denerson added 14 for the Spirit.
The Scots (14-4, 8-0 GSAC) supported Burnett’s effort with Tayler Smith’s 5-for-5 shooting and 13 points. Kiera Payne tossed in a dozen points and six rebounds while Ashleigh Elliot tallied four three-pointers en route to a 14 point game.
