The Maryville College women’s basketball team earned sole possession of first place in the Great South Athletic Conference standings with a 68-58 victory in Demorest, Georgia against the Piedmont College Lions on Saturday afternoon.
Coach Travillian’s Scots took a six point lead to the half after his squad’s defense held Piedmont to 27 percent shooting and beat the Lions on the boards 23-16. At the intermission, Maryville claimed a 32-26 advantage on the scoreboard behind Tara Heyboer’s 11 point effort off the bench.
A 10-6 run in the first five minutes put Maryville up 42-32. Just two possessions later a three-pointer by Paige Sevier and a rebound and basket by Kiera Payne gave MC their biggest lead of the game 45-34.
The Orange and garnet finished the contest holding Piedmont to a 35 percent shooting effort from the floor (18-for-51) while not allowing the home team to connect from beyond the arc (0-for-11) with stingy defense. The Scots also finished with 14 offensive rebounds and out boarded the opposition 41-31 in the contest.
The Scots (11-4, 5-0 GSAC) were led in scoring by Tara Heyboer. The sophomore from Seymour, Tennessee deposited 5-of-9 shots for 13 points while hauling down five rebounds. Kiera Payne added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting with four boards. Alexis Rouvelas tossed in nine points while C.J. Dake tallied eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.
