The Rev. Dr. Al Staggs, a minister, actor and comedian from Santa Fe, N.M., will lead Maryville College’s 2011 February Meetings, scheduled for Feb. 7-8.
Staggs, who performs dramatic monologues based on important theological figures, as well as stand-up comedy and interpretation around the theology of humor, will give thee performances centered on the 2001 February Meetings’ theme, “Acting Boldly: The Courageous Faith.”
All performances will be held in the Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre of the Clayton Center for the Arts and are free and open to the community.
On Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., Staggs will perform “A View from the Underside: The Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer,” a one-person play that takes the audience into the cell where the German theologian awaits execution for his involvement in the German resistance movement during World War II.
Staggs’ second performance, “Laughter for Life,” will begin at 1 p.m., Feb. 8. In this show, Staggs will perform several of his zany comedic impressions, emphasizing the importance of humor in aiding spiritual, emotional and physical health.
The last performance, “Clarence Jordan and the God Movement,” is scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 8.  Through a monologue, Staggs tells the story of a farmer, Baptist minister and biblical scholar who, in 1942, founded the interracial Christian community of Koinonia in South Georgia and later went on to co-found the Fund for Humanity. The fund and the development of Koinonia became the model for Habitat for Humanity International.
