The Maryville College women’s basketball team challenged their second consecutive undefeated team in their opening match-up at the Oglethorpe Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia. The Scots challenged Wartburg (Iowa) in the Dorough Field House on Monday evening. A strong second half surge was not enough for an upset bid as Maryville fell to the Knights 66-63.
Despite 13 first half turnovers and 15 Wartburg points off these miscues, Maryville closed the gap on a nine point Knight lead to retire to the intermission down by the score of 31-26. MC’s Paige Sevier and Lauren Burnett each deposited a pair of three-pointers while Tayler Smith and Tara Heyboer posted eight points collectively in the paint. CJ Dake and Kiera Payne helped the Scots to an 18-11 rebounding advantage after they collectively retrieved nine boards.
The Scots trailed by as much as 11, but a three-point basket by Alexis Rouvelas with 1:03 remaining gave MC their first tie of the game. Wartburg’s game-high scorer Abi Weidemann finished the game with a field goal and four free throws to separate from the Scots and preserve the three-point victory.
Wartburg (9-0) had four players finish with double digit scoring efforts. Weidemann deposited 18 points while Katie Zittergruen added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Samantha Harrington tallied 12 points while Stephanie Reiter had a ten point evening.
Maryville (5-4) saw Paige Sevier finished with 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting. Janell Menard added nine points while Lailah Farmer added eight points. Kiera Payne deposited seven points while bringing down a game-high 11 rebounds.
