The Maryville College men’s basketball fell to 3-6 on the season following their second consecutive three-point loss while traveling in North Carolina this weekend. The Scots dropped a 75-72 decision to the Monarch’s of Methodist University on Sunday evening in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
In stark contrast to their Saturday performance against NC Wesleyan, the Maryville College Scots trailed by 14 points in the early part of the second half and rallied to their first lead, 58-57, at the 7:10 mark by a jumper by Eryk Watson.
The strong comeback was thwarted when after their eighth tie (62-62) at the 4:33 mark, Methodist’s Tanner Carnes and Bryan Hockaday connected on key buckets to pull away. A pair of Mark Jernigan free throws sealed the USA South weekend sweep of the Scots.
Maryville (3-6) was paced by Eryk Watson’s 23 points after the senior deposited four three-pointers. Maverick Willett finished 7-of-17 from the floor with 15 points and eight rebounds. Dustin Baxter added 11 points after he went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Donald Rucker joined Willett in leading the team with eight rebounds. The Scots collectively shot only 32 percent from the field and an uncharacteristically low 64 percent (20-for-31) from the free-throw line.
Methodist (2-6) used the 28 point effort of Tanner Carnes to earn the victory. Carnes was 9-for -13 from the field, 2-for-4 from long distance, and finished with a double-double after a game-high ten rebounds. Mark Jernigan shot 50% from the field en route to a 13 point evening while Bryan Hockaday and Josh Hayes contributed 12 and 10 points respectively.
