Trio ready to showcase skills

Maryville College Head Football Coach Tony Ierulli and his Scots football staff will not be the only ones clad in orange and garnet at the 2010 Division III Senior Classic in Salem, Virginia. MC seniors Corey Brewer, Demetrius Christian, and Phil Garrett will each take their skills to the site of the national championship.
The second annual event will culminate on December 3 with a 7 p.m. kick-off set to be broadcast live and archived over the internet by www.knoxivi.com
The Fighting Scots were represented last season during the inaugural Senior Classic by All-American linebacker Kyle Chewning. 2010 MC seniors Corey Brewer, Phil Garrett, and Demetruis Christian have been invited to join the South unit.
Brewer, a native of Alcoa, Tennessee, played four different positions on this year’s offensive line. He earned All-USA South honors for his outstanding senior season. Over the past three seasons, Brewer has helped his Scots by protecting the signal caller and opening up holes for the ground game. In those three seasons, the Scots amassed 3,148 yards on 1,264 carries. They were able to grab 26 touchdowns running behind Brewer and the line.
Garrett, a standout defensive back from Bradenton, Florida, had 32 total tackles while hauling in three interceptions this season. Phil also earned All-USA South honors in 2010. Garrett has also had a solid career at Maryville College. Through the past two seasons, Garrett has managed seven interceptions with 128 yards in interception returns. His duties also included 14 punt returns for 139 yards. During his senior campaign, Garrett added 32 tackles, 18 of them unassisted, while breaking up seven opponent passes.
Christian is the third All-USA South performer to represent the Scots this season. This senior from Sanford, Florida excelled in MC’s secondary. He finished fifth on the team in total stops with 52 tackles. He recorded a pair of sacks, broke up five passes while hauling in an interception and a fumble. Over his career in the orange and garnet, Demetrius tallied 121 total tackles, hauled in seven interceptions, and broke up a dozen passes.
With the Scots, 12 other members of the USA South Conference are going to the 2010 Classic. Those members include: Jaren Wilcox (DL-N.C. Wesleyan), Antonio Harris (LB-N.C. Wesleyan), James Carter (NG-N.C. Wesleyan), T.J. Grzesikowski (Punter-Ferrum), Willie Taylor (DL-Ferrum), Kenneth Hall (G-Christopher Newport), Adrin Diggs (LB-Christopher Newport), Allen Stallings (DB-Greensboro), Brian Green (DL-Greensboro), Jeremy Dixon (RET-Averett), and Blake Campbell (DE-Shenandoah).
Players and staff reported to Salem, Virginia on Dec. 1.
The City of Salem and the D III Executive Committee both agreed to move the game to Friday evening to add fan interest, excitement, and to provide a trial run for the potential of having the game played in conjunction with the NCAA National Championship in 2011.
