The Maryville College Lady Scots claimed the 2010 Methodist University Cross Creek InnKeeper Turkey Shootout title following a 67-52 victory over the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon.
MC’s Janell Menard posted her season-high in offensive numbers after depositing 6-of-10 shots from the floor including a 5-for-8 performance from beyond the arc for a game-high 22 point effort.
Maryville took a 32-22 lead to the half after holding the Marlins to 25 shooting (8-for-32) in the first period. While the strong ODAC opponent could not find their outside touch (3-for-26 from the perimeter), the Scots out rebounded Virginia Wesleyan 47-30.
Virginia Wesleyan (3-2) was paced by Kristen Blalock’s 18 point effort after she connected on 7-of-10 attempts from the floor. Symonne Newsome added 3 points for the Marlins.
Maryville (3-1) extended their win streak to three games. Menard’s all-tournament performance was supported by Lailah Farmer’s 12 point and five assist addition. Kiera Payne was also a consistent force with her 11 points and team-high six rebounds.
Farmer and Payne were a collective 10-for-14 from the floor. Junior C.J. Dake joined Menard on the MU All-Tournament team for her strong defensive and rebounding effort on the weekend. Dake tallied 10 rebounds over the weekend challenges.
