A local mother is very concerned after a recent incident that occurred behind Smoky Crossing Apartments in Seymour.
According to Smoky Crossing resident Kelly, who asked that he last name not be used, an older man tried to lure two young girls toward him at about 5 p.m. Nov. 12 behind the apartment complex.
She said that she and her mother were babysitting two eight-year-old girls when the incident happened.
While Kelly was outside trying to locate her daughter’s stolen bike along the dog trail behind the apartments, she said a man ran passed her screaming to himself loudly.
At first she thought it may have been one of the teenage boys who her children said had stolen the bike, but she soon realized that she was mistaken.
The two girls she was babysitting quickly ran up to her and said that a man who was holding a knife tried to lure them in and told them not to be afraid.
“They were absolutely petrified,” Kelly said.
According to Kelly the man was older and was wearing dark jeans, a red, blue and white, heavy plaid work coat and a cap.
Kelly said she called the police about 20 minutes after the incident occurred and added that about 40 minutes after she called an officer arrived.
“I don’t think he took me seriously,” Kelly said. “The officer told me that, ‘some children lie’.”
An official police report about the incident was never filed with the Sevier County Sheriff’s Department.
“The way that these girls were crying and with how upset they were, this was not a lie,” Kelly said.
She added that she does not know the name of the officer who arrived at the scene.
“It was horrible,” Kelly said. “I am really worried about letting my children play outside now.
“I just want other parents to know that this is what is going on because it is really scary.”
