The Maryville College Scots celebrated the careers of a dozen Scots football players but little else on Honaker Field as MC fell to Christopher Newport University 42-10 on a cold Saturday afternoon.
The Captains (5-4, 5-1 USAS) tallied 434 total offensive yards after averaging 6.1 yards a rush and 14.3 yards per completion on the afternoon. CNU got on the board early and often when MC’s signal caller Dustin Williams was picked off by Ryan Wever. CNU quarterback Christian Woelfel-Monsivais connected with Justin Reidelbach with a 15 yard scoring strike to complete a six play, 28 yard drive early in the first quarter. The Captains closed out the first 15 minutes of action by finishing off a seven play, 67 yard drive when Woelfel-Monsivais found T.J. Foster for an 11-yard touchdown pass. At the conclusion of the first quarter, Maryville found themselves in a 14-0 hole.
The USA South leading Captains capitalized on their first possession of the second quarter. Running back Keith Gaines scampered 10 yards to conclude another 60-plus yard drive. Stephen Denuel’s conversion made the score 21-0, but CNU was not done before the half. Another Wever interception gave the ball back to the visitors and CNU embarked on their third consecutive 60-plus yard scoring drive. Daniel Bryant pulled down a Woelfel-Monsivais pass from three-yards out and the Captains advanced the score to 28-0. Christopher Newport used the last 47 seconds of the half to drive 64 yards. A 16-yard and 41-yard set of pass completions set up a six yard score via the air by Woelfel-Monsivais to Scott Arvai. Denuel’s kick sent CNU to the locker room with a 35-0 advantage.
The Captains took their first drive of the second half 70 yards in seven plays. Myles Reid finished the scoring drive with a five yard dash toward pay dirt. CNU held a 42-0 lead with 7:22 remaining in the third quarter.
Maryville got on the scoreboard when Brandon Gould returned the kick-off 47 yards to give the Scots excellent field possession. Junior kicker Andrew Noboa promptly tied the mark for most field goals in a single season (11) with a 34-yard field goal. The third quarter ended with Mc trailing 42-3.
The Scots finished the game scoring when back to back passes to Ryan Roach put MC in the red zone. A scrambling Williams found Brandon Gould in the back of the end zone for a six yard scoring strike. Noboa’s kick finished the game with a 42-10 score.
Christopher Newport was paced by Keith Gaines’ 131 rushing yards on 16 carries. Myles Reid added 79 yards on only seven carries. Quarterback  Woelfel-Monsivais finished 14-for-20 for 206 yards in the air. His favorite target was T.J. Foster who pulled down six passes for 125 yards and a score. Defensively, Mike King tallied 14 total tackles including eight solo stops. Adrin Diggs added eight tackles.
Maryville (3-6, 2-4 USAS) was paced offensively by Chad Brooks’ 58 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Dustin Williams was 18-for-31 for 143 yards, but surrendered three interceptions. Ryan Roach and Wesley Idlette combined for 11 catches for 94 yards. Alex Anderson had a standout game on defense with 10 total tackles. Caleb Clement added nine stops.
The Scots will conclude their 2010 season in Ferrum, Virginia next weekend when they take on the Panthers of Ferrum College at 1 p.m.
