Walters State Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant Class of 2010 scored 100 percent on two very difficult tasks. All of the students passed the rigorous national licensure exam on their first try. The students are also now working as physical therapist assistants, giving the class a 100 percent placement rate.
The program’s graduates have posted a 100 percent pass rate three of the last four years. Physical therapist assistants provide a range of therapy and treatment to patients in a variety of situations under the direction of a physical therapist.
“On behalf of the Walters State community, I extend my congratulations to the students and faculty members for perfect performance on these two important measures, licensure testing and placement,” said Dr. Wade B. McCamey, president of Walters State.
This is the second health program at Walters State to accomplish both of these perfect rates this year. Respiratory Care also had a 100 percent pass rate and placement rate.
Ann Lowdermilk, PT and director of the program, said she was very pleased that all of this year’s students passed the licensure exam on the first attempt.
“Actually, this success begins with very talented students and faculty. The students who enter our program are committed, have a passion for physical therapy and want to make a difference in the lives of others. The success of our students is predicated upon our faculty’s commitment to excellence and innovative classroom techniques,” Lowdermilk said.
“Students spend a total of 15 weeks working directly with practicing physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, and we are grateful for their contribution to the preparation and success of our students,” added Nancy Clark, PT and academic coordinator of clinical education for the program.
Marissa Miller, PT, assistant professor, said all of the students in the program are self-motivated.
“We are lucky that we have students who are so motivated to learn. Our students understand how important each course is for their future,” she added. “The program also receives tremendous support from the college.”
