The Sevier County Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a grant of almost $1.15 million on Monday from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security.
The grant will provide money to staff the station 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which will allow the department’s 56 members to respond to calls much faster.
Once the full time hours are in effect there will be four firefighters during each shift at the station.
There are also funds in the grant to aid the other volunteer department in the county by helping recruit quality firefighters and to retain experienced firefighters.
The grant is expected to be implemented sometime in late November.
