The inaugural Smoky Mountain Summit on Psychological Wellness will be held at Maryville College. Hosted by Maryville College’s Center for Strong Communities and the Lindsey Wilson College School of Professional Counseling Institute for Advanced Study, the focus of the summit is “Examining Trauma and Resilience in Women and Children.”
The event will be held Oct. 11 and 12 in the College’s Alumni Gym (with breakout sessions in Fayerweather Hall’s Lawson Auditorium) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Speakers and topics include: Angelia Bryant, Ed.D, Domestic Violence; Dorothy Edwards, Ph.D, Green Dot Violence Prevention; Troyanne Gentile, Ph.D, Community Building; Tammy Hatfield, Psy.D, Feminist Approaches to Treating Victims of Sexual Abuse; Trudy Hughes, M. Ed., Stewards of Children: 7 Steps to protect our Children; Laura Schmuldt, Ph.D., Dialectic Behavior Therapy; Denis Thomas, Ph.D., &. Sue Patterson, ABD, Resilience; Daniel Williamson, Ph.D., Attachment.
Edwards and Bruce Guillaume, director of Maryville College’s Mountain Challenge program, will be the lunch keynote speakers. Participants will also have a choice to participate in roundtable discussions, facilitated by invited presenters on various topics such as Equine Assisted Grief and Trauma Counseling (Kim Henry), Micro-Aggressions and Coping (Dr. Kathie Shiba) and Grief and Resilience (Dr. Jason Troyer).
“This Smoky Mountain Summit on Psychological Wellness provides a forum for diverse professionals to network and interact with experts, invited speakers, researchers, and practitioners to reduce trauma and enhance the resilience of women and children,” said Ariane Schratter, associate professor of psychology at Maryville College.
The conference is open to the public, and participants can receive CEU credits for attending. Registration fees, which include a light breakfast and lunch, are $65 for both days or $35 for one day.
