The Muscular Dystrophy Association plans to round up Sevier County business and community leaders on Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and haul them off to “jail” at the Smoky Mountains NASCAR Speed Park.
The Sevier County Lock-Up will benefit local children and adults who have muscular dystrophy. In the past, the fundraiser has brought in $80,000. This year, the goal is to surpass that total.
After “jailbirds” are arrested, they have to raise “bail” by calling and texting their friends and colleagues and requesting a donation for MDA. The individual goal for jailbirds is to send as many children to MDA Summer Camp as possible, which costs the nonprofit $800 per child.
Many city officials, including Mayor Bryan Atchley, will be at the local attraction. Jailbirds will be treated to a lunch of “bread and water” and break from their labor to race go-carts.
Local children have a blast at MDA Summer Camp each year. Boys and girls, ages 6 to 17, may attend camp at no charge to their families because of generous donations from this Lock-Up and other fundraisers.
To participate or sponsor the event, contact Mike Mangione at (865) 588-1632 or mmangione@mdausa.org.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to find treatments and cures for 43 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services and far-reaching professional and public health education.
