A man died as a result of an early morning crash on Interstate 40 last Thursday.
The Sevierville Police (SPD) and Fire Departments (SFD) responded to the crash at approximately 2:50 a.m. near exit 407.
According to SPD Crash Reconstructionist Preston Parrish, it appears that a 2001 Ford Focus was attempting to enter I40 west when the vehicle left the on-ramp, struck a guardrail and proceeded into a grass and cement shoulder area, before traveling into the westbound lanes where it collided with a U-Haul rental truck.
Two occupants of the Focus were injured and transported via Lifestar air ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center; 31-year-old Aaron A. Long of Oliver Springs and 32-year old Elizabeth G. Conroy of Knoxville.
Another occupant of the Focus, 22-year-old Timothy L. Johnson of Morristown, was pronounced dead at LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville. The driver of the U-Haul received minor injuries and declined to be transported to a medical facility.
All three westbound lanes of I40 were closed until approximately 6:30 a.m., when one lane was reopened. The remaining two lanes were reopened at approximately 7 a.m. The accident is under investigation.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Sevier County Sheriff’s Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Sevier County Ambulance Service and Northview Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the crash scene.
