The Tennessee Wesleyan College Department of Fine Arts is hosting a play writing competition in which 10 plays will be selected for production in the “TEN for TENN” Play Festival.
     The festival will take place Oct. 28 through 31 and Nov. 4 through 7 at the Tennessee Wesleyan Townsend Hall Auditorium On Stage Theater and the Athens Area Council for the Arts Sue E. Trotter Theater.
     Submissions may be made by emailing the script to elove@twcnet.edu or mailing a copy of the script to: Tennessee Wesleyan College, Attn.: Eric Love, 204 E. College Street, Athens, TN 37303. Submissions must be received by August 31, 2010, to be considered.
     All scripts must be written by playwrights who are from or have lived in Tennessee, or be set in Tennessee or have some reference to Tennessee. It must also be between five and 15 minutes long, and appropriate for all ages.
     No professional experience is required, although professionals are encouraged to submit plays. However, all plays submitted must be original and not professionally produced in the past.
     “In terms of theatre, this is really what the local culture is about: telling stories. In Tennessee and throughout the South, if you want to make a point, you tell a story. Every good storyteller knows not to go on longer than 10 minutes,” said Dr. Eric Love, assistant professor of speech and theater. “We want everyone from age six to 106 to submit – anything goes as long as there is some Tennessee connection.”
     The “Ten for Tenn” Festival is 10 performances of 10, 10-minute plays from Tennesseans or plays about Tennessee. It is a celebration of the Tennessee tradition of storytelling brought to the stage and provides a unique opportunity for anyone who has wanted to try his or her hand at playwriting.
