The Knoxville Writers’ Guild will hold its annual open mic night for readings by Guild members at its July 1 meeting.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Streets (in FortSanders). The building is handicapped accessible.
This event is open to the public and a $1 donation is requested at the door.
Those participating in the July program will find themselves at the mic, reading something for everyone in attendance to enjoy. To ensure as many people as possible are given the chance to read, there are several simple guidelines to follow:
Participants must be a current member of the Knoxville Writers’ Guild and can join or renew their membership before the readings begin, so that their name will be placed on the list of readers. There will be a sign-up sheet at the door for those taking part. Writers sign up on a first come, first serve basis.
What writers are going to read should be their own work or that of another KWG member. If it will be the work of another KWG member, participants are required to have permission to read that work.
Each reading time will be three or four minutes maximum; this will depend upon the number of people who sign up to present. There will assuredly, though, be an abundance of readers – given that there are about 200 KWG members. It’s not necessary that the reading last the full amount of time allotted. For instance, if presenters have a one-minute poem and don’t have anything else they’d like to read, that would be fine.
What writers will read should be suitable for a general audience. In other words, presenters are asked to show courtesy to those attending.
"Our open mic night is one of our most popular programs because it gives our membership a chance to read their work in public,” said KWG board president Bonny Millard. “Some members may not have an opportunity to read their work in front of an audience, and this meeting provides a safe and supportive setting.
“The program also allows visitors and other members to hear the work of our talented and diverse group of writers."
