Ghost Hunters will begin investigating paranormal activity in the historic Alexander Inn, also known as the Guest House, in Oak Ridge later this month.
Built in 1943, the Guest House served as guest quarters to a number of dignitaries during the top-secret Manhattan Project (WWII) including Enrico Fermi, Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves. Now paranormal investigation groups want to find out whether any of those visitors are still there.
Since purchasing the building Kate Groover, Executive Director of Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort (ORRE) and owner of the property, said, “I get weekly calls about ghosts at the Alexander. Ghost Hunters and folks who conduct Ghost Tours are always calling about the Inn.”
Groover finally talked to the ORRE Board of Directors about all of the inquiries and after a few giggles the board said, “Why not?”
''I think it will be interesting,'' Groover said. “I have never seen or experienced anything to suggest that the inn is haunted nor have any board members or volunteers.”
Stories are all over the internet about the Alexander suggesting that it is haunted. One site says, “…there is blood on the walls and broken glass everywhere. Outside you can see a figure looking through the curtains…”
Groover assures that there is no blood on the walls and the broken glass is a result of vandalism. As for the figure looking out the window, Groover said, “We’ve never seen it, but who knows?”
The Tennessee Division of Paranormal Studies based in Crossville and Chattanooga will be the first to investigate for Paranormal Activity on June 26. Secret City Paranormal, headed by local residents Scott McGill and Greg Murr will investigate on July 10.
Christy Canny, case manager for the Office of Paranormal Studies, informed Groover that the first thing the team will do is tour the Alexander Inn and determine the best places to set up equipment, which includes ''a four-camera stationary digital video recorder'' that will be set up in four different areas, as well as night-vision video cameras, infrared light enhancers and flashlights, digital audio recorders, sound amplifiers, digital cameras, infrared temperature guns and several electro-magnetic field detectors.
''We do not participate in any sort of séance or Ouija board activity," states Canny, who is based in Knoxville. ''We are a professional paranormal investigation team and use scientific methods.''
Following the investigation the team will review the evidence collected, contact the ORRE and inform them of any ''unexplained phenomenon captured.'' Only with consent from ORRE would any of this information be posted on the group's Web site at www.officeofparanormalstudies.com.
Both groups will make a donation to ORRE for the revitalization of the historic property.
