GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC –  The new Top Shop building at Grandfather Mountain, located near the Mile High Swinging Bridge, opened to the public last Thursday.
The building, which was under construction for the last two years, houses retail space and a snack bar.  Plans are underway for exhibits that focus on relevant subjects such as the Swinging Bridge and Grandfather's extreme weather.
The new Top Shop has an elevator that will give the attraction's wheelchair-bound visitors access to the Mile High Swinging Bridge for the first time ever.  An elevated walkway, or "bridge to the Bridge," has been constructed and links the new building to the Swinging Bridge area.
This facility replaces the old Top Shop that was in operation from 1961 until 2008.
"We can't wait for visitors to come up to see the new building," said Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation Executive Director Penn Dameron.  "Years of planning and hard work went into this project and we are excited to give folks the opportunity to enjoy it."
Grandfather Mountain is a 600-acre scenic attraction and nature preserve located near Linville, NC on US Highway 221, one mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 305.
