A new art exhibit opened at Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center last week, in the Center’s auditorium.
The “Miniature Artists of America Traveling Exhibition” will feature art by 35 MAA members from the U. S. and Europe and runs through Sept. 12.
The special exhibit requires no admission fee, though museum admission will still be required for viewing galleries and the historic village.
Townsend residents and MAA members Wes and Rachelle Siegrist approached the Heritage Center last year about bringing the exhibit to the Center. The Siegrists, and Catherine Girard – another Townsend resident – will be on site to demonstrate how miniature art is created, during the exhibit’s three-month run.
Wes Siegrist, author and historian for the Miniature Artists of America, will also present a lecture/program on the special art form. Exact dates of those demonstrations will be announced later.
“This is an amazing process to watch,” Heritage Center Director Bob Patterson said. “An artist creates a complete work of art on a canvas no bigger than a Post-It note.”
According to information supplied by MAA, the miniature art form is 500 years old. Over 100 artists are Signature Members of the MAA, including six from countries outside the U.S.
For more information on the art form and the organization, go to  www.miniatureartistsofamerica.org .
A special reception with the local MAA artists is scheduled for Heritage Center members on June 25.
