It is a rare event when a father and his son oppose each other as coaches in a ball game. Well it happened this past week as Seymour High School Coach Drew Payne, the son, coached against his father, Coach Dennis Payne of Cosby High School in a soccer match up at Seymour High School.
In this game the son was victorious by shutting out his Dad 8-0.
The Cosby team was out manned by Seymour who had more talent and more numbers. The Eagles have 10 more players and are in 3-A classification while Cosby is 2-A.
Neither team had scored after 10 minutes and it looked as though Coach Payne vs. Coach Payne would be a nail biter but then the blue and gold dam broke.
Seymour began raining goals before the subs were put in the second half.
Scoring was divided equally among all 8 Eagles as follows; Jacob Lindsey unassisted, Austin Acree assisted by Carson Jones, Carson Jones assisted by Austin Acree, Stephen Martin unassisted, Brandon Slaybough assisted by Corbin Marine, Tanner Potts assisted by Nathan Drain, Corbin Marine assisted by Carson Jones and Adam Ogle assisted by R. C. Gann.
Asked about coaching against his Dad, Seymour Coach Drew Payne responded, “It was pretty cool coaching against Dad. After the game started, however, I didn’t think about it. It was just another game. We had more talent and numbers which put them at a big disadvantage.”
Oddly enough, Drew Payne’s Dad, Dennis Payne didn’t really coach soccer (except for 1 year) until he became interested in the game after watching Drew start playing at an early age.
Dennis Payne coached football and basketball mostly except for one year in 1987 at Farragut High School he was the assistant soccer coach on the Admiral state championship team.
Coach Drew Payne was proud of his Eagles team which hit 8 shots in 33 attempts.
Seymour Coach Payne had this to say, “We kept a high level of play throughout the game. We played a complete game which is what I’ve been looking for out of these guys.”
Next week will be the most important week of the season for the Eagles as they play 3 district games against South-Doyle, Sevier Count and Cocke County.
Seymour is looking to improve their current district record of 0-1 and 2.
