The Seymour soccer team is struggling for consistent play after losing 4-3 to Morristown-West and tying Jefferson County at home 2-2.
The Eagles continued struggling to put two good halves together to give them a complete game.  Coach Drew Payne had this to say, “We continue to have a hard time playing a complete game; it’s frustrating.”
In the loss at Morristown-West, the Eagles were led in scoring by Jacob Lindsey with 2 goals and Stephen Martin with one. All three goals were assisted by Austin Acree. All three players involved in the scoring are seniors at Seymour High School.
The Eagles started slow as the score was 2-0 Morristown West at the break. As usual Seymour followed one dry half by putting 3 points on the board the second half; but Morristown West added one last goal with 10 minutes left to finalize the win by a score of 4-3.
The game was not without controversy. As has been the case quite often this season, the game only had two refs when there are actually suppose to be three. One goal scored by Seymour in the first half was wiped off by the refs who’s position on the field was questionable. Another call went against the Eagles to decide the outcome of the game in the second half. Again the short handed refs had to make the call out of position.
Seymour Soccer Coach Drew Payne had this to say “There were some questionable calls in the game but I feel like it was because we only had 2 refs when we should have had 3. This has occurred in other games. It still is no excuse for us not winning the game. We had our chances and didn’t take advantage of them. We were also given the option of rescheduling the game at a later date but we both (coaches) wanted to play then. It is frustrating, however. When you score 3 goals, you should win the game.”
Seymour tied Jefferson County 2-2 at home later in the week. They were lead by senior Jacob Lindsey who scored both goals with one assist from senior Stephen Martin and another from junior Corbin Marine.
The Eagles outshot the Patriots 16 -8 but could only manage 2 points in the tie, extending the problem they have had all year of not cashing in by getting the ball in the goal.
The score was tied at the half 1-1. The second half was a mirror of the first with both teams scoring only one point apiece.
Coach Payne said, “We were the better team. It’s very frustrating when we play well and the point total doesn’t show it. We better start doing it soon or our season will be over.” The Coach was obviously referring to post season play.
Coach Payne summed things up by saying “The seniors need to show some heart, passion and leadership. They have played well but they need to take their play to another level. It’s that time of the year when we need the seniors and upperclassmen to show some heart and passion. We need more consistency in our scoring.”
