For the second time in 2010, senior track & field standout Jackie Areson has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week.  The product of Delray Beach, Fla., picked up the honor Tuesday after her fantastic performance at the Stanford Invitational over the weekend.
Running in the fast heat of the 5000 meters in a field that featured more than 100 competitors spread out over four sections, Areson turned in a runner-up effort in an outdoor career-best time of 15 minutes, 51.56 seconds. That mark was second in the race to only an NCAA Division II record time by Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler (15:44.07), and it ranks as the fastest in NCAA Division I thus far during the outdoor season.
The time, which stacks up as the second best ever run by a Lady Vol behind Kathy Bryant’s 1982 effort of 15:37.73, came two weeks after Areson doubled at the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking third in the 5K and fourth in the 3K.
Areson, who also garnered Lady Vol distinction on Feb. 1 after the Penn State National Invitational indoors, is not expected to join her teammates at the Pepsi Florida Relays this weekend. She should, however, be back in action April 7-10 as Tennessee plays host to the Sea Ray Relays at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
