Spring track is underway at Seymour High School as the Eagles started their season in a multi-team meet on their home track.
You know spring has sprung when the temperature is 70 degrees, you hear the starter gun firing in a track meet, baseballs coming off bats and you can see softball lights in the distance.
The results of the meet completed the setting. The girls won with a 130 total followed by Cocke County 89, Gatlinburg-Pittman 68 and Sequoyah 61.
The boys finished runner-up to Cocke County 167 with 80 points followed by Gatlinburg-Pittman 59, Sequoyah 27 and TSD 17.
Girls’ winners in the individual running events were as follows: Samantha Ferguson 1st in 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18:87 seconds; Elizabeth Cody first in 100 meter dash with a time of 13.3 seconds and winner of 200 meter dash with a time of 28.83 seconds; Amanda Smith winner of 800 meter run with a time of 2:56 minutes and Jasmine Hickman won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 55.93 seconds.
In the girls’ relays, Seymour took two events; the 400 meter relay with a time of 57.87 seconds and the 800 meter relay with a time of 2:37 minutes.
In the Long Jump event, the best Seymour finisher was Jodie Wood with a 13 foot 10.5 inch jump good enough for runner-up.
In the High Jump event, Hailey Clark took first with a 4 foot 8 inch winning jump.
In the Shot Put event, Shayla Brown won with a 29 foot throw, while Hanna Moore was runner-up with a 25 foot 5 inch throw.
In the Discus event, Shayla Brown won again with an 85 foot 1 inch throw while Rachael Whitley was runner-up at 73 feet 2 inches.
On the boys’ side, the Eagles had several winners in the individual running events. They were as follows: Chase Ketron won the 100 meter dash with an 11.4 second winning time and also the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.69 seconds and Houston Hammer won the 300 meter low hurdles with a time of 47.35 seconds.
Runner-up was Stephen Dickinson in the 800 meter with a 2:16 minute time; Houston Hammer in the 110 meter high hurdles with an 18.59 second time.
In the relay events, Seymour finished third in the 400 meter relay and the 3200 meter relay.
Seymour was very strong in the Shot Put event placing four out of the top five as follows: Nick Smith’s 39 feet 7 inches throw finished first; Blake Overton finished third with a 35 foot 10 inch throw; Wes White finished fourth with a 34 foot 11 inch throw and Dustin Fain threw for 34 feet 6 inches for a fifth place finish.
In the Discus event, the results were similar. Jordan Lee finished second with a 103 foot 3 inch throw; Troy Houk finished third with a 102 foot 4 inch throw; Wes White finished fourth with a 102 foot 2 inch throw and John Staser finished fifth with a 98 foot 11 inch throw.
Coach Cotton Julian had this to say about the first meet of the season, “This was our first meet of the spring track season. The girls were a pleasant surprise. They did well in all their events. I was pleased with the girls and the boys. We held our own but we’ve got areas we need to work on. I look forward to the weeks ahead.”
Next up for the Seymour Track team will be the Mountain Press Relays at Seymour on April 1st at 11 a.m.
