The late great Bear Bryant, the legendary Alabama football coach once said that a tie was like “kissing your sister.” Well, it happened in Seymour’s first district game of the season against Morristown East at home in a 2-2 tie.
Down 2-1 late in the game with less than 3 minutes to go the Eagles scored to tie, 2-2 which was really a feeling of relief because it saved a loss. The shot was one of both goals scored by Carson Jones, a sophomore standout, assisted by Tanner Potts, a senior.
Seymour soccer coach Drew Payne had this to say, “This is one we really needed to win and should have won. We’ve got to learn to play the first half. We didn’t decide to play until we fell behind. We’ve done this a few too many times. A tie is better than a loss, but we really should have won.”
Seymour put them self in a hole early in the first half falling behind 2-1. The Eagles decided to focus more in the second half and pull out the tie.
Seymour outshot Morristown East 20-5; an incredible advantage which should produce an easy win rather than a tie. Coach Payne said, “We weren’t shooting the ball well. We were rushing shots and taking shots from bad positions. The shots just weren’t going in. Finishing has been a problem as far as putting the ball in the net. Shot selection had something to do with it, but mostly it was just bad shots; not putting the ball in the net. We’ve got to get better at shooting before other district games and tournament time.
The mood on the team and Coach Payne after the game seemed to be one of disappointment. A win was really expected especially after the huge Seymour shot advantage.
The Eagles probably learned a lot from the loss, such as being ready to play from the very start of the game.
The meat of Seymour’s schedule, mostly district games, is in front of them following spring break. The team will practice through spring break with a little time off.
Coach Payne summed up by saying, “We need to get better; but we’ll get there.”
Next up for the Eagles is Karns April 6 th at home at 7pm.
