The Walters State Community Band invites residents to its spring concert. The concert begins at 3 p.m. April 11 in the theatre of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex on the Morristown campus. Admission is free.
The concert will feature performances of “The Sinfonians Symphonic March,” “Second Suite in F” and Wagner’s “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.”  After a brief intermission, the band will perform tributes to Leroy Anderson and the Beatles, before closing with a traditional Sousa march.
The band’s members are a mix of high school and college students learning more about music and community members who want to continue playing. Director Tom Shupe and assistant Greg Woodruff have directed area high school bands for many years.
Under their leadership, the Walters State Community Band has grown to 60 members.
“This is one of the best groups of musicians we have had,” said Shupe. “It’s been a real pleasure for Greg and I to work with this group.
“The members of this band play because they love to play.”
The band draws members from Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson and Sullivan Counties. Schools represented include Cherokee High School and Rogersville Middle School, Morristown Hamblen High School East and West, Jefferson County High School, Greeneville High School, Cocke County High School, Grainger County High School and Claiborne County High School.
