Maryville College’s annual Easter Sunrise Service will be held at 7 a.m. April 4 on the campus’ Lloyd Beach.
The public is invited to attend the morning worship service.
Maryville College Campus Minister the Rev. Anne D. McKee will deliver a sermon entitled “Eating and Drinking with Jesus.” Her sermon is based on the earliest followers of Jesus sharing food with the risen Christ, as told in Acts 10:39-43.
“The earliest followers of Jesus were convinced he was alive, not by force of argument or even by their deep hopes, but by the experience of sharing food together – a picnic on a beach, a late-night meal with strangers, ordinary food that brought the stunning realization that Christ was alive,” McKee said. “We will consider the ways we, too, come to know Christ’s presence in our midst.”
Lloyd Beach is located on the southeastern end of the campus (behind Lloyd Hall) and offers picturesque views of the sunrise over the Chilhowee Mountains.
The service is casual, and attendees who are not able to stand during the service are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Center for Campus Ministry.
“What a better way to begin the Easter celebration than by gathering on the hillside at Maryville College to hear the Resurrection Story with so many from the community, greeting the sun as it rises over the mountains?” McKee said. “This is one way of sharing with Jesus’ earliest followers the surprise and joy of Resurrection.”
A breakfast will be held at nearby Willard House following the service.
