The season hasn’t started the way Seymour Coach Dana Carter preferred but it’s how a team finishes that is more important than how it starts.
The Lady Eagles lost the first game of the regular season to Pigeon-Forge by a score of 3-0. The Lady Tigers pitcher Lindsey Vaught went the distance to maintain the shutout over Seymour on the Lady Eagles home field. Seymour’s pitcher was Celest Whaley.
In the second inning, Seymour’s Sarah Cook’s single sent a runner to home only to be picked off at the plate by P-F center fielder Wojnowski with a perfect throw.
In the seventh, the same lady Tiger center fielder halted a Seymour scoring rally by catching a piercing line drive.
In the fifth, Seymour had a lead off runner on first and Vaughn then took care of business by striking out the side.
The Lady Tigers took the lead in the third inning as McKenzie Oliver drove in Wojnowski with a sacrifice ground out. Pigeon Forge then added two more insurance runs in the seventh to seal the win.
Pigeon Forge Coach had this to say after the game, “It’s always nice to get a win under your belt. Dana (Carter) was my pitching coach on our travel team, so it’s a friendly rivalry.”
The Seymour Lady Eagles then lost their next game also at home to the South-Doyle Lady Cherokees by a score of 6-2.
Carly Lewis started at pitcher for the Lady Eagles.
S-D scored the first 2 runs early, then after the score was tied, the Lady Tigers added 2 more runs. In all four runs the Lady Cherokees started by getting to first base on a walk.
Lady Eagles Coach Dana Carter had this to say, ”We’ve had a disappointing start with minor issues such as lack of leadership, lack of hitting, and wasted opportunities such as leaving runners stranded on base.
“The defense and offense needs to pick up the pitcher through the rough innings.
“The majority of our starters are new at their positions. They need to adjust and improve with a will to prepare to win. It’s all in the preparation.
“It will come. We had a heart to heart talk after the S-D game.”
Next up for the Lady Eagles softball team is Cock County away.
