The Seymour Eagles Baseball team took their opener in the Smokey Mountain Baseball Tournament by storm last week with a 13-0 thrashing of the Claiborne County Bulldogs.
The tournament was held at Don Doyle field in Seymour. After defeating Gatlinburg-Pittman 7-3 in the earlier game, the Bulldogs ran into the train at the end of the tunnel when they met the home standing Seymour Eagles.
Corbin Weaver starting the game at pitcher struck out the side against the Bulldogs to start the game in the first inning. The Seymour hitters responded. They attacked the fence as though it was the enemy.
Seymour’s first batter, Chase Turner was put on first as he was hit by a pitch. Cody Fox drilled a single to left driving in Turner after the left fielder bobbled it allowing Fox to go to second base. Brandon Timmerman walked bringing Keegan Newport to the plate with 2 runners on. The first pitch was sent towering toward Seymour Intermediate School. It’s debatable whether it cleared the school building or not, but one thing is certain’ it cleared the right-center wall very easily scoring three more runs.
Corbin Weaver then doubled off the wall and Oakley Fox drove him in with an RBI single.
Seymour finished the first inning with a 5-0 advantage; not a bad start!
Two innings later with the bases loaded and two outs, Brandon Timmerman lined a two-run single to left making the score 7-0.
As if that wasn’t enough, Newport lined a two-run double scoring Cook and Timmerman, making the score 9-0 Seymour. Ben Whisler added one more run with an RBI single driving in Newport making the score 10-0. Seymour ended up with a 13-0 massacre. The game was called due to the ‘mercy rule’ after five innings.
Weaver went the distance for the Blue and Gold giving up only two hits in the shutout. Seymour had 13 hits in 5 innings. If a team has a 10 point lead after 5 innings the game is stopped.
Seymour baseball Coach Scott Norman had this to say, “Corbin Weaver threw the ball really well. We will need him in top form throughout the season. I’m glad he’s back on track after struggling a little bit in pre-season.
“Our hitters smoked it the entire game. We came out in the first inning swinging the bats well. “
When asked about the Smokey Mountain Invitational Baseball Tournament, Norman responded.”The tournament went well. We had a great turnout and good weather. We hope to invite some top East Tennessee teams in the future.”
Next up for the Eagles is Morristown East in a home and home series (away first). Maryville is at home on Thursday, and William Blount on Friday away.
