Knoxville – Teams are getting a jumpstart on registering for an annual event that always makes a splash. Nearly 30 teams already have secured a spot to race in 41-foot long dragon boats.
Registration for the 8th Annual Knoxville Dragon Boat Festival, Presented by ORNL Federal Credit Union and benefiting Knox Area Rescue Ministries, is officially open.
The event will be June 26 at the Cove at Concord Park. Top prizes will be awarded, but the real winners are the beneficiaries of the event – Knox Area Rescue Ministries. Last year, paddlers from 50 teams raised more than $96,000 in pledges for the organization.
The most fun, unique cultural event featuring adrenaline-pumping action, dragon boat racing grows in worldwide popularity each year. Teams rave about the excitement, friendly competition and community spirit surrounding the sport.
Teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and steerer race in authentic Hong Kong style dragon boats. All ages, skill levels and physiques can participate, making it the ultimate team building sport, requiring synchronicity and finesse, more than power to win.
The Knoxville Dragon Boat Festival showcases competitive community and corporate teams racing for title of Grand Champion.
Each team will get two on-water practices the week prior to the event and compete in at least two heats on race day. Each team will race in qualifying heats for the title of Grand Cham¬pion.
