They say “all good things must come to an end”.  This quote applies to the Seymour Middle school girls’ basketball team, especially the eighth graders.  This group of girls has basically played basketball together since the 4th grade.  Many of them were also on the SMS volleyball team which went undefeated for two years, winning both the regular season and County Championship.
In basketball this group under the guidance of Coach Janet Johnson lost one regular season game last year and none this year.  They also won the regular season and County Championship both years.  They were also runner-up in the East Tennessee Sectional Basketball Tournament.  No Seymour Middle School girls’ basketball team has ever made it that far.
After winning the Area Three Championship game for the second year in a row, Seymour advanced to the East Sectional Tournament where they defeated Unicoi County 45-35; Cherokee 34-17 and Colonial 45-35.
The Seymour Middle girls then advanced to the Sectional Championship game where they were defeated narrowly 41-33 by Science Hill Middle School.
The first Quarter was close with Science Hill taking an early lead 9-6.
The second quarter was Seymour’s downfall as they scored only 3 points and gave SHM some easy baskets off of turnovers out front..The score stood 21-9 at the half.
Science Hill basically maintained the lead the rest of the game.
Lexi Justus had an outstanding day scoring  22 points despite the loss.
After the Championship game the team went to Nashville to compete in the’ Best of the Preps Tournament ‘. They defeated Ellis Middle 37-28;Coffee County 38-17; and Harpeth Hall twice 39-31 and 38-33 for the championship.
Seymour Middle Coach Janet Johnson had this to say, “This season has been amazing. I want to first and foremost thank God for how he has blessed us. It has been an honor and privilege to coach these outstanding young ladies. This eighth grade class has been very special to me and I will miss them greatly; but the team has some fine young players returning and coming up from the sixth grade team.
“I want to thank Dr. Nelson , the school, faculty, our fans, community, and parents for the support throughout this terrific season.”
According to Phil Hamilton , SMS volleyball coach,” Many of these girls are honor students. They have tremendous character and work ethic that enables them to achieve goals. They have always represented their school and community so very well. We should be proud and congratulatory to this outstanding group of ladies.”
The Seymour Herald would like to congratulate this group of girls for outstanding achievement not only athletically but in other areas as well.
