A church attended by a Seymour High School Teacher is doing its part to support the Haiti earthquake relief effort.
Our Lady of Fatima Church in Alcoa will be accepting donations and holding events to raise money to benefit the victims of the earthquake that occurred in Haiti on Jan. 12.
The Alcoa church supports the Monseigneur Jean Baptiste Decoste High School in Haiti.
“We pay the teachers’ salaries and send extra money for food, because often the only meal that students get is at school, this was true before the earthquake,” said Our Lady of Fatima member and Seymour High School Teacher Joyce McFall.
She added that since the Haitian government has ordered people to leave the capital of Port au Prince and go to outlying villages, Father Wilfranc at the church’s school has even more mouths to feed.
“I am selling cookbooks to support this cause,” McFall said. “They are any amount from $1 to (whatever donation people would like to give).
“We also have two breakfasts coming up to benefit Haiti.”
A pancake breakfast at Our Lady of Fatima Center to benefit the Haiti recovery operation will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 31 and donations will be accepted.
The church’s confirmation class is also tickets for a waffle breakfast on Feb. 14.
The $20 ticket will entitle participants to a waffle breakfast and drawing for a walnut rocker and original watercolor painting.
“All proceeds go to support our school in Haiti,” McFall said.
Our Lady at Fatima Center is located at 858 Louisville Road in Alcoa. For more information about how to donate call the church at (865) 982-3672.
