LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Tennessee track & field teams kicked off the 2010 indoor season with very limited action on Friday night at the Kentucky Invitational.
Vol freshman Tyler Stepp turned in the highlight performance for the Big Orange at Nutter Field House, as J.J. Clark made his debut as the director of track & field for both the Vols and Lady Vols.
In the men’s high jump, Stepp snared third-place honors in his first collegiate competition.
The Jefferson County High School product soared over six feet, 10 1/4 inches, which was just 3/4 of an inch off his outdoor personal best. He cleared his first three heights (6-6 1/4, 6-8 1/4, 6-10 1/4) before missing at 7-0 1/4. Tone Belt of Louisville cleared that height on his first attempt to claim victory.
Redshirt freshman Drew Thomas, another East Tennessean from Greeneville High School, placed 12th in the men’s weight throw at 53-2 1/4. That was well past his previous personal best mark of 46-1 1/4.
The only women’s event featuring Lady Vol competitors was the weight throw. True freshman Jessie Harrison of Collierville, Tenn., had the longest measurement of four UT competitors, finishing 19th with a heave of 52-2 1/2.
